2014 Academy Awards: short listed 19 animated features

A shortlist of 19 animation films was presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to go up for the Best Animation Feature at the ceremony for the coveted statuette at the 86th edition of the Academy Awards. This list includes US and foreign films that will be released - at least in Los Angeles - within the end of the year.

Here is the list in alphabetical order:

- Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 by Cody Cámeron and Kris Pearn

- The Croods by Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders

- Despicable Me 2 by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud

- Epic by Chris Wedge

- Ernest and Celestine by Stéphane Aubier, Benjamin Renner and Vincent Patar

- The Fake by Yeon Sang-ho

- Free Birds by Jimmy Hayward

- Frozen by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck

- Khumba by Anthony Silverston

- The Legend of Sarila by Nancy Florence Savard

- A Letter to Momo by Hiroyuki Okiura

- Monsters University by Dan Scanlon

- O Apóstolo by Fernando Cortizo

- Planes by Klay Hall

- Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie - Rebellion by Akiyuki Shinbo and Yukihiro Miyamoto

- Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury by Luiz Bolognesi

- The Smurfs 2 by Raja Gosnell

- Turbo by David Soren

- The Wind Rises by Hayao Miyazaki

While there are 19 names presented, it does look like a fairly padded list, out of which Despicable Me 2, Monsters University and The Wind Rises inevitably stand out. These films can also be nominated in other categories and, as it has happened in the past with films such as The Beauty and the Beast and Toy Story 3, in the Best Picture category.

The final nominations will be announced the 16th of January 2014, while the ceremony will be taking place on the 2nd of March 2014.
