"While it may not have the digitally structured perfection of the more contemporary expensive films of the kind, The Shadows makes up for its lack of CGI with an inventive approach that makes the experience dreamlike and rewardingly organic. Inspired by a George McDonald fairy-tale of the same name, it tells the story of Matthew, a nine-year-old boy who finds the key to the magical world of the shadow people. With wonderful costumes and make-up as well as outrageous characters, including a genie in a bottle with a squeaky voice and an evil white witch Colin Downey seems to pay tribute to the magic aura of the older celebrated matinees. He does this, however, without disregarding the underlying darker undertones of traditional fairy-tales – also by borrowing elements of German expressionism in its use of shadows. The film’s biggest flaw is that it slows down considerably in its second part. However, also considering its comparatively minuscule budget, there is no doubt about the fact that Downey has put together a small gem that potentially falls right on top of the chart of fantasy films ever produces in Ireland."
