"A unique sort of biopic, tribute to Edward D. Wood Jr., generally regarded as the worst filmmaker ever. Here, Tim Burton looks at all the various and strange different aspects and the character’s genuine struggles for his ‘art’ as well as giving us an intimate look at his friendship with Bela Lugosi, who starred in some of his movies. The portrait given by Burton is a surreal work of love with plenty of the same irony and comedy that seems to be inspired by the b-movie style of the films that Ed Wood himself shot (although here the effect is intentional), but it is also strikingly touching and intimate. The performances given by Johnny Depp as Ed Wood and Landau as Bela Lugosi are simply superb. A strange work of love and admiration, with a final irony that a film about the worst filmmaker of all time may well be regarded as one of the best films of all time."
