"In 1996, Van Damme took matters into his own hands and tried to cast himself in his own movie and give himself a character he could really be proud of. The Quest, however, is quite a mess – and a surreal one to say the least. It starts off with Van Damme playing a slapstick comedy like character from the great depression, as a street performer who helps children. However, then it essentially becomes a surrogate version of Bloodsports, as he enters a fighting tournament. All the initial creativity is wasted, and in the end a little trivial single short epilogue is added. The fight sequences are fun, but this is a wasted opportunity. However, the morale of the story could be drawn from the ‘go the distance’ tagline of the film – Van Damme simply could not go the distance."
