THE BEACH BOYS: AN AMERICAN FAMILY (2000) - ♦♦

Directed by - Jeff Bleckner

Written by - Kirk Ellis

Starring - Kevin Dunn, Jessica Shannon, Frederick Weller

"The story of the legendary band The Beach Boys, from their beginnings to the later stages of their career, reveals the band in a more domestic light and is as much a family drama as it is a music biopic. Despite the interesting storyline and the obviously excellent music, the film pitfalls in all the usual structural cliches of the most average and bland TV movies.

There are some redeeming factor, as director Jeff Bleckner seems to take more artistic freedoms in the second part of the film, where the story gets darker especially dealing with Brian Wilson's mental problems and Dennis Wilson's rebellious behaviour, as well as the examination of his relationship with Charles Manson. Overall, however, its The Beach Boys: An American Family is pretty lukewarm and disappointing."
