Sam Mendes’ depression era set crime drama, with its careful Conrad Hall photography, brings a more atmospheric mood to the gangster film, as well as a more intimate emotional warmth that is almost new to the genre. Performances are good, but Jude Law’s small role as a psychotic and creepy hitman is show stealing."
