The first big studio production directed by Cassavetes after he had made his directorial debut with the independent production and groundbreaking Shadows. This film is less spontaneous and exciting and all in all a lesser work in the director’s wonderful filmography. Nevertheless, its character study and interesting look at the theme of music, a theme dealt in films commercially all too often, is fresh and original."
