"IRRATIONAL MAN by WOODY ALLEN is the story of a tormented philosophy professor who re-discovers a joie de vivre after he commits a drastic existential act.

This might be the most deceiftful of WOODY ALLEN films in recent years. It is not as comedic as its outlook would have you believe, and despite its sometimes all too formulaic structure, allows the filmmaker to deal with some of the themes and issues of morality that he has examined throughout his career in a focused way.

One of the most interesting elements, for instance, is the man's unhappiness, but also the way in which he is idealized by one of his students and one of the other female university professors, both of whom have idealized him for relatively selfish reasons. In the end, character study is also quite non-judgemental, and allows the audience to interact with its developments and conclusions."
