AFGHAN STAR (2009) - ♦♦♦♦

Directed by - Havana Marking

"The documentary Afghan Star gets its title from the Afghan version of the X Factor, which bears the same name. Filmmaker Havana Marking follows its inaugural production, which co-incides with the delicate birth of democracy in the country, and particularly pays attention to a handful of its contestants.

This documentary is nothing short of fascinating. Beginning with the sheer power of its concept, Afghan Star is greatly original and effective in its wonderful and insightful examination of the socio political situation of a country, and its unfamiliar perception of morality.

The power of the film is enhanced by the fact that, not only is this film greatly entertaining due to its natural tension and a great involving pace, but also because it doesn't undermine the human aspect and takes great care in representing its subjects in a realistic and genuine manner. On top of that, Afghan Star sits well with a more Western audience, who will find it easy to understand the atmosphere of Afghanistan due to its central subjects that refers to an extremely popular TV show format.

The work undertaken by Havana Marking is praise worthy. She is clearly not afraid to get her hands dirty, and carry on in her intent even when as the show causes more vociferous opposition and hints at violence become more frighteningly threatening.
