NICOLAS WINDING REFN's feature is almost equally as dark and fascinating in its complexity as it is frustrating and trivial. The focus on the psychological side of the film is exciting, but there are far too many excesses in both style and context that wear both plot and character development so thin that it's hard to care for it in any substantial way. 

Thankfully, TOM HARDY's performance is magnetic as the tough and crazy criminal, and his intensity saves the film from simply being an exercise in over-indulgence."
