THE KID (1921) - ♦♦♦♦♦

Directed by - Charles Chaplin

Written by - Charles Chaplin

Starring - Charles Chaplin

"The first feature film by Chaplin is a sad comedy about a little Tramp who finds an orphan child and raises him. Meanwhile, the mother becomes a successful opera star and starts doing charity in the hope of finding her son. Eventually, the authorities threaten to separate the tramp and the kid. In 1921, with his first feature film, Chaplin not only revealed as more than a comedic powerhouse but also one of the greatest filmmakers in the world, a reputation which continues to this day. The Kid is simply an astonishing piece of cinema which perfectly balances the comedy, from its most extreme slapstick form, to the drama, with its genuinely tear jerking moments. This is the kind of balance that has rarely been replicated so naturally and with such genuineness since by more recent counterparts, but it hardly matters because although it is silent and almost one hundred years old, like other films of Chaplin's, it doesn't seem to have changed a bit or lost any of its impact."
