"The story of an orphan girl living in a parallel world where people’s souls walk by their side in the shape of animals who discovers the lady she has been picked up by a lady, lured by the prospect of travelling to the North with her, is the head of an organisation that kidnaps children. Based on  a book by Pullman, this film is really the perfect example of Hollywood narrowing themes (particularly the Catholic Church) to its commercial essence. In the final scene, war is even described as ‘inevitable’, which is quite a graceless statement. The special effects are good."
