"Thriller about a detective on the hunt for a Nazi world criminal, though he seems to have a perfect life with a wife and a job at the Connecticut university. Orson Welles was apparently forced into making this film, which on paper seems like the straight forward noir story about a lead character’s ambiguity. Nevertheless, he seems inspired as always in his use of cinematography and strange camera angles that provide his film greater and darker psychological themes. After all, this film dealt with Nazism in the immediate after war and that is another thing that makes the portrait of the man with a hidden and secret past identity all the more haunting."
