WILD STRAWBERRIES (Smultronstalle) (1957) - ♦♦♦♦♦

Directed by - Ingmar Bergman

Written by - Ingmar Bergman

Starring - Victor Sjostrom, Bibi Andersson

"An elderly academic takes a car trip from Stockholm to Lund to receive an honorary university prize, bringing his daughter in law and picking up three youngsters on the way. But what was supposed to be a normal car trip turns into a spiritual journey, where the old man reflects upon his life, his past disappointments, his guilt and his loneliness.

Certainly one of Bergman’s best films and perhaps even his most accessible, while retaining the same philosophical and complex propreties, and deep reflections on life and death. Sjostrom, a legendary figure in Scandinavian cinema, with his performance in this film delivers a rare treat that deepens the humanity and intimacy of the work as a whole.

On top of that, the photography, aware of the beauty of the nature that dominates the setting in a picturesque way, adds sheer visual candy to Wild Strawberry."
