This film brings glamour and heavy sexualised undertones without slipping into tasteless exploitation, but also a psychologic depth, intense character study and intelligent structures where a lot of subplots can be read between the lines. Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo, for instance, are memorable in a film that is still one of the most effective of the genre, and along with Dean create a much discussed about surrogate family or soft spoken romantic triangle."
