"The life of Johnny Cash as told in this biopic by James Mangold. But whilst it may have been based on Johnny Cash autobiographies, this film speaks much more in the language of average and sloppier romantic flicks than anything else. Furthermore, it seems to have been greatly influenced by Ray, the biopic on the life of Ray Charles that had been released to great success the previous year. In retrospective, this film feels like a summation of many elements that can be found in music biopics. Nevertheless, the great leading performance by Joaquin Phoenix – including his singing voice that comes close to the real deal by the man in black himself – is ace. On top of that, from a visual standpoint, the film is quite delightful."
