"A retired woman goes looking for a man who has a secret connection with her recently deceased neighbour. Ambitious and unique are two words that come to mind when talking about Miguel Gomes' film Tabu, yet they still do not seem to do the film enough justice. Truth is that with its creative storytelling which expands on the boundaries of cinematic narrative and cinema meant as a form of language is incredibly remarkable and sets it aside from not only the conventional film structures but also from the art house one. It is experimental, yet ultimately the storyline which it chooses to follow culminates with a passionate love story set in the heart of Africa, which conceals adventure and romance much stronger than the socio-political implication that Gomes heavily hints at in the first part of this film. This could perhaps conceal a satirical reflection on art house cinema or at least the general perception of art house cinema. It is certain however that this also shows Tabu's unwillingness to be associated with any other work, whether commercial or art house. Of course, the beautiful aesthetic aspect of the film must be mentioned. Gomes makes a wonderful use of cinematography which is effective not only through the use of a particular type of black and white scale that recalls films of a time long gone by but also with careful framing that always tastefully fits the requirements of the story's unpredictable whims."
