"THE SINGING NAPKIN is the resuly of MARIUSZ GRZEGORZEK's collaboration with the fourth year students of the Polish National Film School in Lodz, billed as the first feature length film in its history. Despite the fact that it is billed as a full lenght feature film, it is in fact an anthology of fiction films tied together by a half hearted documentary concept in which the students reveal their personal reasons behind wanting to make it as actors.

The end result is awful, also because it starts off on a high. While the documentary aspect remains constantly trivial, the first fiction film about an angry young man and his tender hearted bond with his dog is both sufficiently honest, gritty and powerful. But it ends abruptly, and from there on alarm bells start sounding.

Despite the difference in style and tone of each of the short film concepts, they are all unbearably annoying and somehow always seem to end with a chaotic situation. The title then comes from the final short film, which is a fairy tale like story about a princess and a mysterious prince. And it's quite an underwhelming centre-piece, which screams style over content.

It is a real task to get through the whole duration of THE SINGING NAPKIN, that is full of cringe worthy moments and very little payoff."
