AMERICAN HISTORY X (1998) - ♦♦♦♦

Directed by - Tony Kaye

Written by - David McKenna

Starring - Edward Norton, Edward Furlong

"The haunting drama about Neo-Nazism in modern society seen through the eyes of a man in jail for committing a murder, who upon his release has changed, and now must help his brother who seems to be headed down his same road.

American History X was surrounded by controversy and even disowned by director Tony Kaye, who claimed that Norton had re-edited it without his permission. Perhaps the ending is a little brash, but this violent drama is a hard hitting comment on youth angst, political extremism and tackles fearlessly an issue as delicate as racism.

Edward Norton’s performance is among his strongest. The film also looks great thanks to its photography that stylishly mixes black and white with colour sequences, that adds unsettling grit, as it is driven by great emotional and psychological tension within a violent, dangerous and morally unappealing world where redemption seems very far away."
