"Free-spirited and young mother of two Paula falls in love with the unhappily married conservative Paul. Both suddenly feeling oppressed by boundaries of institutions of all sorts, Paula desperately tries to free Paul from his conservatism. A times defying the oppression of East Germany, though cleverly getting away with it, The Legend of Paul and Paula is remarkable enough if only for its bravery and understated snub at censorship. The film itself is quite a non-conformist love story, and while sometimes it may seem a little silly, it’s still entertaining and sweet."
