"Set in the Civil War when the US Calvalry turned its attention to the Apache, a Lt. Col. finds his son has enlisted and has become one of his men. A while later, his wife arrives at the fort as well. Less emotionally engaging that it should have been, it struggles to escape the the old cowboys and Indians format. Naturally, this being a John Ford film, the action sequences are still exciting, and it’s fun to see Wayne playing the psychological father of the soldiers, a role which he obviously liked to play."
