"Spielberg’s story of evil aliens after a few movies about friendly ones is less intersting than it sounds, as it comfortably blends in with so many other science fiction films about alien invasions. The visuals, as expected, are spectacular. Yet the second grade screenplay seems like a summation of plot elements that interest Spielberg developed in quite underwhelming ways. Not to mention that an unnecessary subplot interrupts the exciting rhythm of the film and makes it seem a little overstretched."
