"A portrait of Queen Elizabeth during the time of the death of Princess Diana. This is quite a sophisticated character examination, not least of all due to the excellent performance by Helen Mirren as the titular queen. Frears as usual provides a tasteful and elegant performance that is completely at easy with its uneasy and quasi controversial territorial delving. The Queen is after all examining an event that remains speculated about in Britain, but here it is dealt with rather tastefully. The art direction adds a sense of glamour to it all, while the screenplay reminds us that there is also a delicate hint of domestic drama in the story of the royal family behind the public scandals and tabloid nuisance."
