TORNATORE's THE BEST OFFER seems to draw inspiration from the classic Italian giallos, with a sophisticated and mysterious storyline full of symbolism that only occasionally pitfalls, mostly due to some of the filmmaker's excesses that prevent the film's emotional side to truly connect with the viewer. 

The film looks spectacular, also thanks to the lush art direction. 

JIM STURGESS is given little to work with in his supporting role, but GEOFFREY RUSH is in top form in his leading performance that subtly progressively humanizes an immediately disagreeable character with great sophistication."
