Black Snake Moan is sexually charged, dark and raunchy, set in the typically hot and desertic American South. Nevertheless, the paradox is that doesn’t dare enough, because it chooses style over substance and lacks a depth in its examination of the more psychological and even ethical aspects of the film. This results in it seeming frustratingly shallow. 

It is an almost complete waste of many interesting elements, including its colourful characters, one of whom is Samuel L. Jackson’s god-preaching bluesman character."
