"The story of how Walt Disney convinced P.L. Travers to let him produce a film version of her Mary Poppins work. Saving Mr. Banks also explores the writer’s own inspiration behind Mary Poppins from her own painful childhood experiences and Disney’s struggles to keep the difficult Travers happy with the production’s work. This film is just the kind of sugary piece of self-celebration that one would expect from Disney. It has its few charming elements, such as a stand out sequence where Disney takes Travers to Disneyland, the inclusion of the famed Disney songwriting team of the Sherman brothers or even with the well-meaning performances by Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks. Yet, its hard to ignore the clumsiness and cliché of its structure – particularly in the way it deals with the flashback sequences."
