"Despite the title, there are no real common grounds between JARMUSCH's famous indie film and this short by CRISTI PUIU - in fact, neither cigarettes nor coffee are consumed throughout its duration.

Furthermore, CIGARETTES AND COFFEE is very much built around scripted verbal play, as it follows the awkward and sometimes daunting encounter between a father, who has recently been left unemployed, and his son, who appears to be a successful man that has little time for his father. As the first asks the latter for help, we notice the class divide that has grown between them, and a drastically unusual yet realistic representation of a relationship between father and son.

The style is minimalist, and the structure is quite simple, but the drama is legitimately powerful. CIGARETTES AND COFFEE is a film that is rooted in the future, and leaves many grey areas in the past or the future of the event it chronicles that are bound to achieve a fulfilling engagement with its viewer."
