"A Better Life is the story of a hard working Mexican father living as an illegal immigrant in the States. He is finally able to buy his own truck and start his own landscaping business, but when the truck is stolen, he sets off on a desperate search for it with his son, unable to get any help from institutions because of the dangers of deportations.

Chris Weitz is very much influences by Italian neo-realism in this film that especially burrows its narrative core from De Sica's Bicycle Thieves. Despite the traditionalist storyline, the film is quite an honest examination of a delicate socio-political issue and provides a good portrayal of cultural contrast.

Another remarkable aspect of the film is that it never quite overplays its narrative aspects, and rather goes for a genuine examination of the father and son relationship, which is one of the most rewarding aspects of the story also because of its authentic take.

The film also features a very strong performance by Demiàn Bichir in the leading role. He is well able to connect with the audience through his carefully restrained and yet intense performance, which balances his vulnerabilities with a heartwarming determination."
