Peter Weir’s excellent period adventure drama set in the high seas is perfectly comfortable and respectful of the times it is set in, and stood as a more art house competitor to sea adventures released at the time which aimed to appeal blockbuster audiences with more commercial approaches, which perhaps makes it more suitable for an older and more mature audience. Visually, it is beautiful with its breathtaking photography, tastefully accurate art direction, and use of delicate classical music to create an elegant atmosphere. The storyline is centred around a theme of humanity and friendship that feels genuine, and Russell Crowe yet again delivers a magnificent performance."
