"The son of a gay cabaret owner comes to visit and makes the announcement that he is getting married. The catch is that his prospective in laws, who will be visiting for an introductory dinner, are strict conservatives and hence he requests that his father and his partner act as straight as possible so as not to offend of jeopardise his marriage plans.

It’s quite predictable that it should come across as less clever or even daring as La Cage Aux Follies, the seventies French film which The Birdcage is the remake of. But the colourful art direction, particularly entertaining sequences and an overall tasteful outlook on homosexuality – never exploited as one might fear in a film such as this - still make it quite an amusing and enjoyable comedy of good taste."
