"A young infantryman is placed in a platoon and witnesses the horrors of the Vietnam wars. To make matters even more difficult is the fact that the platoon is morally divided into two, each group led a commanding officer who fights a personal psychological battle with the other. Oliver Stone’s directorial debut is based on his own personal recollections of his experiences of the war in Vietnam, and it truly feels like a compelling personal piece of work which is rightfully regarded as one of the finest of the genre. Its depiction of the dehumanising process of a man placed under such terror, pressure, stress and constant fear of an unseen enemy is forceful, and creates a gripping atmosphere of tension, conveyed by a great score by Delerue and a great cinematography by Robert Richardson."
