"A well digger in pre-WWII is torn up between honour and the love for his daughter when she is impregnated by a handsome young air pilot. The photography is amazing and worthy of the tradition of French impressionist art. The fact that the film looks beautiful, however, does not disguise a sometimes campy screenplay, where for instance the subject of war feels dealt with all too frivolously."
