"It’s hard to believe that what is regarded as one of the most influential films of the horror genre once found it difficult to find a distributor. The concept is simple, and is based around flesh eating monsters who spread like epidemics. George A. Romero may not have officially started the genre, but certainly revived in in a more credible way. With underlying satire and dealing with social issues, one of which is racial conflict, the film is a gem and genuinely scary, with its low budget look and black and white photography contributing to the overall chilling appeal in a way in which many other low budget horror films never could."
