The film flows naturally but conceals a lot of very heavy dramatic undertones which are thankfully never led down the route of conventionality or cheap sentimentalism, retaining a realist feeling that led many young men at the time to empathise with the titular character. Newman’s lead performance is very charismatic and powerful, adding iconic value to the film."
