12/7/2014 - "Corn Island" wins the Crystal Globe at the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

 

The 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has come to an end today and the winners in all its categories were announced.

 

In the official competition, a jury presided by legendary producer and now director Luis Minarro awarded the highest prize – the coveted Crystal Globe – to the Georgian film Corn Island directed by George Ovashili. The film sets to depict the bond between man and nature set against the backdrop of the Inguri River, which forms a natural border dividing Georgia and Abkhazia.

 

The special jury prize for this category went to the French film Free Fall, directed by Gyorgy Pálfi. Pálfi also won the award for best director.

 

On the acting front, it was Elle Fanning for her performance in the role of the daughter of jazz pianist Joe Albany in Low Down by Jeff Preiss who picked up the award, while Nahuel Pérez Biscayart won the best actor prize depicting the childlike Argentinian male prostitute in David Lambert’s All Yours.

 

On the East of the West competition, the jury was presided by Turkish filmmaker Ahmet Boyacioglu gave the main award to the German film Correction Class and a special mention to Serbian film Barbarians.

 

The documentary films competition jury was presided by Israeli filmmaker Philippa Kowarsky. It awarded the main prize to the Belgian documentary feature Waiting for August by Teodora Ana Mihai. The film is follows the lives of seven Romanian siblings whose mother has moved to Italy for work. A special mention went to Austrian doc feature Steadiness by Lisa Weber, while Boris Poljiak’s observationalist documentary Autofocus won the award for best short doc.

 

On the Forum of Independents front, the jury awarded German film Anywhere Else by Ester Amramami with the highest prize. The Audience Award went to the Czech film by Olga Sommerová, The Magic Voice of a Rebel.
