Its representation of a marginalised life widely lacks embellishments and this approach very often makes film feel nothing but uncomfortable and cold. Yet, it still feels daring and ambitious in its brutal dealing with themes of deep internal conflicts, and Ewan McGregor's performance figures among his personal best."
