GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002) - ♦♦♦

Directed by - Martin Scorsese

Written by - Jay Cocks, Steven Zaillian, Kenneth Lonergan

Starring - Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz

"A young man seeks revenge on the criminal Bill the Butcher who killed his father, in a film set in New York in the 1860s. Scorsese ambitiously takes his gangster epic films to the streets of New York in the 19th century, but his ambition of taking a story on the foundation of modern American civilisation does not translate well to the screen. Gangs of New York stands as a flawed revenge film that seems even slightly patronising. DiCaprio is possibly miscast, but the evil performance by Daniel Day-Lewis is still powerfully absorbing."
