"URUPHONG RAKSASAD's AGRARIAN UTOPIA examines the plight of Thai small landowners and agrarian workers who find it impossible to live a whole year without giving into accepting loands from shifty city individuals, and then have no choice but to sell their lands to them.

The film's unembellished immediacy makes it seem as starkly realistic as a documentary - it is almost surprising in deed that it isn't. This portrayal of outrageous neo-feudalism is as disarming a social portrayal as they come.

Its slow rhythm allows for a ponderous connection with the audience. But it is also this rhythm that allows the film to reveal its drastic contrast of idyllic countryside landscape with the hellish life of hardships lived by the people RAKSASAD is so sympathetic towards.

Demanding but ultimately rewarding and important, AGRARIAN UTOPIA is a film of subtle and powerful protest, with great focus and of universal as well as regional relevance."
